Patient Stays Wisconsin is dedicated to providing free, safe accommodation to abortion patients in Madison. Through our service, patients are given a private room in the homes of screened, trained volunteers.
Patient Stays Wisconsin is an initiative of the NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin Foundation, an organization that works to ensure women throughout the state are able to make their own reproductive choices. Donations to the Foundation are tax deductible.
Wisconsin’s Abortion Access Crisis
As of October 2015, there is now one abortion provider per one million Wisconsin women. The three abortion clinics still open are located in Madison and Milwaukee. Women in the north of the state are left with few options, and have to travel long distances to receive abortion care.
Travel adds to the financial burden of abortion, which can cost up to $1,500 for a surgical procedure. Women seeking an abortion are subject to laws designed to restrict access and, in some cases, encourage them to continue their pregnancy. All abortion patients must receive counseling designed to dissuade them from ending their pregnancy, be given an ultrasound, and then wait at least 24 hours before being given the abortion pill or receiving surgery.
Under these circumstances, a friendly face and a comfortable bed can make all the difference.
